First Half


The first half saw Sydney FC, led by Campuzano and Arslan, needing to take the initiative, especially since they were playing at home and behind in the standings. Meanwhile, Auckland FC controlled the game throughout the first half, even though they were further behind league leaders Newcastle Jets, but without much urgency as they didn't need a place in the AFC Champions League.


Second Half


Steve Corica returned from halftime with Rogerson replacing Francois, to add some fresh energy and also a national team player. Ten minutes later, he brought on two of his stars who were on the bench: Uruguayan May and Howieson. Sydney also made changes, but it wasn't until the end of the game that, with a pass from Quispe, defender Popovic opened the scoring to the delight of the stadium. However, it wasn't long before Alex Grant equalized in stoppage time.


Standings and next round


Auckland FC are 4 points behind leaders Newcastle and are now focusing on Saturday’s (21) away game against local rivals Wellington Phoenix, while Sydney FC, in the playoff zone, face Brisbane Roar on Saturday (21), also at home again.
