The game looked like it would be balanced before the match started, with Auckland FC having a slight advantage as they are leading the tournament and were coming off an away win.
The first half in Melbourne was uneventful, and in the end, Australian Lachlan Brook opened the scoring for the league leaders.
The second half began with City's team, managed by Aurelio Vidmar, in possession, and their pressure led to an equalizing goal from a penalty in the 70th minute, scored by academy graduate Caputo. It wasn't long before another academy player converted, this time for Memeti, who secured the win for the home side.
The New Zealand team remains in the lead despite the defeat, but Sydney FC is now 2 points behind and has 2 games in hand, while the Australian team is 4 points behind the leader and within the Finals Series zone.
