The Sydney team was a considerable favorite for this match, coupled with their current second-place position and Wellington Phoenix's poor form.
The first half in Sydney started with a lot of action, with the New Zealand team playing more defensively, waiting for counter-attacks. At 29 minutes, Australian Carlo Armiento opened the scoring, and at 43 minutes, Youlley was sent off for the Australians.
Ufak Talay returned from halftime with two substitutions, aiming to equalize despite being a man down, in order to turn the game around and consequently take the lead, since Auckland FC had lost in Melbourne. However, in the 63rd minute, Hughes scored the winning goal.
Campuzano's team missed the chance to take the lead but at least maintained their place in the next Champions League, while Wellington's team dropped out of the Australian Cup 2026 play-off zone and are now 2 points away from the Finals Series.
