First Half
The first half began with Melbourne City in a slightly more comfortable position, partly due to being within the qualification zone for the Finals Series, unlike the New Zealand team which was desperately seeking a victory to get back into the fight for the playoffs. In the 23rd minute, Libyan player Ifeanyi Eze opened the scoring at Sky Stadium, thus ending the first half.
Second Half
In the second half, City needed to be more aggressive and have more possession to try and get a result, but it was the star of the match, Ifeanyi Eze, who increased the lead to 2-0 with only 52 minutes left in the second half. Aurelio Vidmar made three substitutions shortly after the second goal, bringing on Kanamori, Kuen, and the newly signed youngster Younis. Then, in the 73rd minute, the young player from Danish football pulled one back, and not long after, in the 77th minute, the academy graduate Memeti equalized at the Sky Stadium. Just when the game seemed destined to end in a draw, the referee awarded a penalty, but defender Manjrekar James missed it in the final minute.
Standings and next round
Giancarlo Italiano's team is just 2 points away from qualifying for the Finals Series and faces Melbourne Victory at home on the February 6th, while reigning champions Melbourne City are on the edge of the qualifying position and face Western Sydney away on February 7th.
