Auckland FC, the favorite to win the OFC Pro League title, entered the match against South Island United with a slight advantage, mainly because the South Island team was founded in 2025.
Coach Rob Sherman's team started the match well, with their defensive lines well positioned, but it was in the 30th minute that Auckland FC opened the scoring with Oscar Faulds.
Even with some changes and a different strategy, the team of Auckland City's newly signed star Christian Gray managed to hold on to a 0-1 lead until the 80th minute when Ferguson and Gillion sealed the game.
Auckland FC, with a coach from their reserve team but some players from their main squad, are the favorites to win the tournament, while South Island United have a team that, on paper, is qualified to advance to the next stage.
