#Episode1 OFC MEMBER'S SOCCER ANALYSIS

Niue, a Polynesian nation in free association with New Zealand, is marked by its strong and independent culture. The island was colonized by Polynesian sailors around 900 AD, arriving from Tonga, Samoa, and other islands. The first European to sight it was British Captain James Cook in 1774. He was met with hostility and, as a result, named it "Savage Island."

The Niue national team has only participated in one international competition in its history: the 1983 Pacific Games, held in American Samoa. Their performance was marked by two defeats:

Niue 0-14 Papua New Guinea

Niue 0-19 Tahiti

Since these matches, the Niue national team has not played any more games.

The Niue Island Soccer Association (NISA) became an associate member of the OFC in 2006, at a time when the confederation was seeking to expand its membership following Australia's withdrawal. Although the affiliation lasted 15 years, it was revoked in 2021 due to prolonged inactivity.

Club soccer in Niue is governed by the Niue Football Association, a successor entity to the former Niue Island Soccer Association (NISA), which was dissolved in 2021. The island's main competition is the Niue Soccer Tournament, an intermittent amateur tournament. The tournament does not follow a regular annual calendar and is generally contested by teams that form for the season. The main competition takes place in a single round, with teams facing each other in a round-robin format on the pitch in Alofi, the capital, to determine the champion.

Venue: National Stadium, Alofi (500) The clubs participating in the league are formed by local communities or villages: Alofi Avatele Hakupu Liku Makefu Muta Talava Tuapa Vaiea The revitalization of soccer on the island, with the new federation, has sought to organize new tournaments in sports such as 7-a-side soccer and futsal, demonstrating an effort to keep the sport active.

The strong influence of New Zealand, one of the world's rugby giants, has made the sport the most practiced and followed sport by the local population.

Initiatives such as the OFC's, with FIFA's support, to add regional content to FIFA+ and also the possible creation of the OFC Professional League will professionalize the region's elite and consequently bring the spotlight to countries where football is still.

In short, although football has a history of participation in the 1983 Pacific Games and OFC membership between 2006 and 2021, they are not far behind in taking the next step, which would be to reactivate the national team and formalize the league. They are close to participating in the 2028 OFC Nations Cup qualifiers, and their experience in the Pacific Games, combined with their many years of OFC membership, are great assets.
